Based in Tanfield and loved by locals, Pitman Pies is a multi-award winning local business selling a variety of hearty pastry goods.
The owner, Michael Rowlands, was looking for a way to create a seamless, professional labelling system whereby product labels clearly displayed allergen and ingredient information for the wide variety of pies he supplied.
A significant change in the law that came into effect in October 2021, known as ‘Natasha’s Law’, resulted in the requirement of all potentially life-threatening allergen information being highlighted within a full ingredient list on all direct sale (PPDS) foods.
This meant that Michael had to redesign his labels so that this vital information was boldly and clearly displayed on all of his products.

After Michael made an initial enquiry, the Label Lab team visited his premises and sat down with him to discuss his labelling challenges.
We designed a new layout for his pre-packaged pie labels, one that took into account the number of ingredients and allergens and ensured the font could easily be deciphered and that the new labels brought out the vibrancy of Pitman Pies’ distinctive logo.
Once the design was approved, we created cutters and plates to print the labels. We also supplied and set-up the software for a standalone printer for Michael, so that he had the flexibility to print the pie labels within his own premises in response to changing stock levels and production.
Over the 3 years that Label Lab have been working with Pitman Pies, Michael has made regular orders of 20,000+ labels to support his growing business.

They designed a full colour digital label with a bespoke shape that works so well with our logo.
They also supplied a printing system that allows us to simply request a label that is stored in the printer, so no need for a computer to be attached. This was a great space saving solution.
Label Lab worked closely with us to acquire barcode registration and set up all of the labels including highlighted allergens in the ingredient list. They even set each label to automatically print the best before dates, meaning all we have to do is select the label and quantity that needs to be printed.
We print a few thousand labels every day for approximately 30 types of pies. Working with Label Lab meant that we were able to find a cost effective labelling solution that saves us time and space.
